Normally after the lunch hours in office people will be in a sleepy mode. Productive things are difficult to come at that time. Last week when we were sitting like that, suddenly a conversation started on a toy car which was seen in my colleagues cabin. It was presented to him as X'Mas gift. It was a car which can go forward if we apply a backward force.

The conversation soon went through so many toys which were used by surrounding people in different ages and finally settled on the pop pop boat and what is the science behind that boat which runs using a candle by producing a top top sound. Then the google started and find a link on how to build a pop pop boat

The building of pop-pop boat was simple. After that the site http://www.instructables.com/ got my attention.It contains so many hobby projects and interesting things. But there was not enough time as it was office hours. So just googled similar sites like that and got so many .Some are listed below. Hope you will also like these sites.

Downloading .jar & .jad files from getjar.com into computer

Last week I was into a conversation about advanced mobiles ie smart phones and usage of applications made for those devices such as iPhone apps, Andriod market and Windows Phone 7. Different people had different phones and when we started downloading apps, we could see equivalent apps for all the phones. The main attractive applications ideas were the metal detector, leveling ball to check whether the surface is in level and the protractor to measure angle. All of them works based on the sensors inside the phones such as digital compass, accelerometer, gyroscope etc...Some people using smart phones for years came to know that their phone has these many capabilities after that conversation. At the end people were making fun by saying about replacement of traditional devices with smart phone.

But I was not able to install anything in my phone as I have an old Nokia 5300 which I am using for calling and smsing rarely browsing like the other smart phone owners do.Anyway that conversation made me to search for some apps which can be installed in my phone. Very soon the google ended up in getjar.com. I think you all knows about www.getjar.com for the availability of mobile applications. It is a good site actually but the issue which I faced was the absence of download application button into the PC. It was ok to download to mobile if we browse m.getjar.com from mobile browser. But due to some issues in the mobile net connection, I had no option other than to download to PC and copy to phone via USB.

The research didn't reached anywhere .(May be I am weak in searching for mobile apps) .Then I started exploring the net in other way and could see a good mobile browser emulator runs in Java. Its nothing but the opera mini. I navigated to that simulator and put the m.getjar.com there and was able to download the .jad file. Still I am missing the .jar file. After inspecting the download url I decided to try out replacing the .jad extension with .jar and it worked!!! .Yes we can download the .jad & .jar files form getjar.com into our desktop / laptop.

Follow the steps below.Its easy

How to get the mobile apps from getjar.com to our computer.
- Open the opera mini browser simulator http://www.opera.com/developer/tools/mini/
- Navigate to m.getjar.com it will not recognize the mobile device. Set the device properly
- Navigate to your app & click on the download button.
- The .jad file downloads .Then find out the URL of the .jad file downloaded.
- Change the .jad file ext to .jar and paste the url in browser and download the .jar too.

iPhone & iPad from windows user perspective

Today I happened to play extensively with apple's 'i' products such as iPad & iPhone.It is related to one of our project where I am responsible for it's server side architecture using WCF and Azure.I am from windows background with experience in almost all the versions from Win95 to Win7.

End User perspective

UI - Superb.

It's great idea controlling everything using one button.
Great touch interface.
There are Mute and Volume buttons but no next/previous buttons.
Not able to see any file manager.

Performance & Stability - Very good.

Not able to hang iPhone with normal operations.
But hung when a downloaded third party came into play. But could see that it changes to safe mode and restarts very quickly.
Really fast even if there are 15-20 apps open
Only one app runs at a time. Minimized apps are in dead state .Hence its fast.Don't know how background processing apps are going to work.

Hardware

Rock solid and wonder how they pack all the things inside a small box.
Can't find any screws. How this is going to be repaired in case of any trouble? Is Apple that much confident on their product or want the device to be repaired by their own people?

Applications

Plenty of apps.Even free apps.
Can only install from Apple store
Only registered users can download.I was using iPad which my company owns.It took sometime for me to get credential to download a new app.
If I have access to Indian Apple store I cannot get the apps which are available in US store.
We should be vigilant in each and every click to protect our money. But no fraud.

Connectivity

i device can connect with only another i device through bluetooth. Better they should remove the Bluetooth feature from it
Need iTunes to copy music to the i device - Unwanted bound between a software and device.
Able to connect through Wi-Fi .Good that there is no i wi-fi router.Otherwise we would have to purchase that too

Security

Its like a black box.Nobody knows what is happening inside the machine. So difficult to hack.
When we type password anybody can stand behind or near us and can get our password.Really sad to say that the typed letter is converting into dot(.) very slowly.

Developer perspective

Language

Need to learn Objective-C to write anything.

Apple provides good APIs.
Cannot find an API to host background process where Apple does for its apps

Development & Testing

Need to have account to test the App

Hosting

Need to have account to distribute the app.
Validation took time.
Account is categorized to regions

Overall it looks like a closed place where we have no control on what how things are going on inside except trusting Apple as a company where once Steve Job's himself was out.

Setting password for bsnl modem WA3002G4

I was not considered about my wireless network security at home till yesterday because my house is situated in a village and no nearby houses in which the wireless network reaches.But yesterday I could see one of my neighbor boy having a mobile with WiFi connectivity and he asked my permission to connect through my wireless network. It was a shocking moment for me that there are so many with these types of mobiles in our area.But on the other hand I am proud that my village is also growing with the technology world.

So decided to put the security in my bsnl wireless modem model WA3002G4.It was tough first time.There is no direct password mechanism. At last after a fine google I got the below link from bsnl which explains each steps with screen shots.Thanks to bsnl…

Hard disk partitioning in Win 7

My requirement was very simple which I used to get very easily using Partition Magic in Win 98 and XP.But now it is Windows 7 which contains a bunch of tools to help us to get rid of third parties.

Coming to my requirement.I have a 80GB HDD in my desktop where I had partitioned 10GB –C:,10GB-d:,10GB-E: and remaining in F: drive. C: for windows ,d: for program installation , e: for learning materials and my projects and finally F: for entertainment.This worked well with previous Win98 and XP.But when I came into Win7 the windows installation itself took around 9GB in c: hence the system started crying after few days.So decided to free up some space in f: by deleting some movies and and give that space to c:.

Simple.Isn’t it.I started with the Disk Management tool in Win 7 but soon realized that my requirement will not be served using that tool.The tool is nice .We can create ,delete and shrink partitions.But can’t move a partition.In other words we can’t do without data loss.We can increase size of the drive if there is vacant space nearby.

As usual started googling and saw some tools are not up to date with Win 7 and some are again paid.After spending some more time I got the below tool which is free and allows me to move data as well as manage partitions.

Vista and DVD drive

Today I got an serious issue with DVD drive in my Vista laptop.The problem is the drive is not detecting the data which is written using it.It says "Prepare this blank disk" if we put the written disc.I tried putting the disc in other machines and its working.The real joke is the DVD was just being written by same DVD drive.

After a google I fould the solution.We need to uninstall and install the dvd drive from device manager.Links are given below.

IT @ School Installing Linux easily

Yesterday I went to one of my cousin's house.The aim was to install one special flavour of Ubuntu Linux called IT @ School.Basically I am a .Net developer and have a very limited experienced in Linux.My experiences had given me a understanding that installing Linux is difficult task and working with that is again another big task having limited knowledge in hand.But I took that as a challenge.

What is IT@School

This is a project by Kerala Govt to ensure the IT awareness in the schools.Kerala Govt already said good bye to Microsoft and welcomed Linux.Obviously it is not wise to buy Windows licenses for each schools.Even I have to learn basic Linux to talk with the next generation here.I strongly believe that all the establishments here will move to Linux in the future because cyber law is getting strength in India.According to the nature of the people here if something is free of cost which will satisfy their needs, they will definitely go for that.

How to install Linux
When I was in college I had tried installing RedHat Linux which was not in syllabus(Now most of the colleges moved to Linux).At that time I had to keep 2 OSs.Win98 and Linux.That was the painful task.The intallation order was Windows then Linux.When I play something in Linux and if that crashes I had to reinstall both.Very tough.At that time the resources were very limited too.(10GB HDD ,500Mhz Intel and 64MB RAM)

But now things are very much easier.The systems got enough or more than that in configuration.Running a Virtual PC machine is not a big deal.

Now you might have got the idea of running more than one OS without pain.Just create a virtual machine and install the Linux Distribution in it.No dual boot or MBR changes.Take a backup just after installing everything in case of any crash because it is Linux.Restore it whenever needed.

IT@School distribution has got a good documentation even step by step installation guide in Malayalam with screenshots.Even with that I had to install twice to get a working installation.Any way it is nice.

Setting Airtel Mobile office in Win 7 though Nokia 5300

It was a big question,which connection I should take in my home.Since my home is in a village the options are very limited.Finally I came to the BSNL's 500C plan which combines Home phone rent + 1.5GB internet traffic + Night unlimited only @ 500+modem rent.
I applied for the coneection and things were fine until the local exchange people told me the heart breaking fact.That exchange is running out of broadband slots I have to wait until somebody terminate their internet connection.
Again the search for net connection started.Reliance is providing net through wireless cards.But I have to purchase device for the small period and the rent is too high for a CDMA connection.Our cable provider (Asianet) has internet facility.But that is not available in my locality.Finally decided to activate Airtel Mobile Office in my mobile.
It is just 250/Month for unlimited usage.Speed is less.But due to the situation, I selected it.But after activating Airtel Mobile office, I came to know so many setting in my computer and mobile.Its too complicated I think.
Steps to activate Airtel Mobile Office and use in Win 7 computer through Nokia 5300 Express

Call Airtel customer care in 121 and ask them to activate Mobile office.They will ask some questions about the account before activation.
Some times it will take 24 hours to get the activation message and settings as per airtel.For me it took around 20 hours.
Save the settings which are received in the mobile.
In the mobile

Goto Settings->Connectivity->Packet Data->Packet Data settings->Edit active access point
Set Alias to Airtel.This name can be anything.Remember the name because we have to set this in some other place.
Select Packet data access pt.Give the address airtelgprs.com there.
Change the active access point to Airtel.(Or the name you gave in step 4.)

Install the Nokia PC suite if you havn't installed.This will install the Nokia phone modem.
Go to control panel and open the Phone and Modem Dialog .If you can't get the way to open the dialog directly, search for the "Modem" keyword at right side search box while you are in control panel.
Open Modem Tab.There will be an entry for the Nokia 5300 modem.
Select the modem and click on properties.
In the advanced tab there will be "Extra initialization commands filed".Give AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”airtelgprs.com”.
If you can't edit that field, goto the General tab and click on the "Change settings" button.(Win7 security)
Now click on the Network icon present in the system tray.The popup shows the new modem.
Right click and connect.Give *99***1# as dialing number.Leave user name and password fileds blank.
Done.The icon will change as connected.Enjoy browsing.

Since Win 7 is having new interface I will be adding images as soon as possible.

Nice feature in word2007 which helped me lot in preparing my final year MBA project report.We can easily add TOC in our document, if the headings are formatted using the correct heading styles.

Here are the steps to automatically generate TOC in Word

Create new document
While typing format your headings using the “Styles” tab in “Home” section.These Heading are the elements which will be included in the TOC.
After finishing typing with above said formats goto “References” section and click on the “Table Of Contents” button placed on “Table Of Contents” tab.
Customize the appearance of TOC to suit your document.

Installed Win7 and new features

Finally I installed the Win7 yesterday the new operating system from Microsoft.The machine was a AMD Athlon 4000 with 2GB Ram.And it is performing fine

Before explaining about the title 'Google APIs' ,let me talk about the present situation.Before Google APIs, if someone wants to develop web site with a jazzy UI which includes charts or maps he should have to code a lot to get the charts and maps displayed.Or he have to contact any custom control vendor to meet his requirements.Thats a costly process(in case of vendor) as well as time consuming(if we develope ourself).
